Free IRS-Sponsored Tax Assistance: VITA (Part 1 of 6)

By Marnina Delahanty At Asurea, we know how you feel about TAX SEASON! So we’ve researched FREE IRS-approved assistance you may want to access in doing your taxes! In each segment of this six-part series, we’ll explore your options. Today’s program is VITA. Now, let’s find out what it's all about.

What is VITA?

Of all the tax preparation assistance programs out there, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)  is the only one that’s directly sponsored by the IRS. So, your tax preparer is trained by the IRS itself in both online and classroom formats! Sponsoring organizations set up clinic-like stations for these IRS-certified volunteers to work in. Knowing this gives you a unique peace of mind you don’t get elsewhere. Furthermore, VITA tax preparers are volunteers helping you out of desire rather than employment necessity.

What Kinds of Taxes Does VITA Help With?

The VITA program works with basic state and federal tax returns.

Who’s Eligible for VITA?

According to the IRS, VITA is available to taxpayers qualifying in one of these ways:  those earning $56,000 or less, people with disabilities, Senior Citizens, and/or those with limited English-language abilities.

How Does VITA Work?

VITA operates in two general ways. The first is to help you do your taxes from scratch. The other option is “Self-Prep.” Here, an IRS-certified volunteer helps you on an as-needed basis as you do your basic state and federal taxes with the web-based software provided by that center. This method is only available where “Self-Prep” is offered, so be sure to verify that your location offers it.

How to Find a VITA Location Near You:

To find out where and when you can access VITA at a location nearest you, use this online locator tool. Or, if you prefer the phone, locate VITA centers by calling 800-906-9887. Be sure to check if your branch has volunteers available on a walk-in or appointment-only basis! This differs from location to location based on demand and volunteer availability.

What to Bring:

Preparation is key to getting your taxes done in one shot! The IRS has a prepared list of things to bring that cover all bases. Don’t be intimidated by its length, though! This list addresses all possibilities, so not everything will apply to you!
